Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that provides affordable housing to low income families around the world. Without the help of volunteers, Habitat would not be able to provide simple and affordable houses to those that live in poverty. Vestavia High School accomplished something that no other high school in the nation has done before. In 2005, Vestavia started its own Habitat for Humanity club, then proceeded to not only raise $44,000 in funding, but also build the home within the same year. As a freshman, I became involved in the club’s second year of operation. After attending my first Habitat build, a spark was ignited in my heart. I developed a passion to help the less fortunate and this passion continued to strengthen every time I attended a Habitat build. When I would get home after being on the worksite for 8.5 hours, I would lay down and realize everything that I had accomplished that day. I helped build a home for a family that was in desperate need of it.
After listening to a family’s hardships, I would immediately know I wanted to help build the home for them. In my eyes, a home was more than a just a place to sleep, it was a place where families could build their future and accomplish their dreams. I soon realized that God had a purpose for me in life and it was to help people. I got my satisfaction not from receiving awards, but from seeing the tears of happiness on a family’s face when we gave them keys to their new home. This is what drives to me help others and I knew I wanted to become more involved in our Habitat club. I set my sights on becoming the president of the club. I was treasurer of the club my sophomore year, president my junior year, and president emeritus my senior year. Since the club’s existence, 6 Habitat for Humanity houses have been built by the Vestavia Hills High School Habitat for Humanity club, and many more will be built in the years to come. Since that spark was first ignited in my heart, Habitat has shown me that people need our help, and that it is our duty as servants of God to help them.
